Welcome to Chilas, the inviting capital of Diamer. There are 50,000 petro glyphs and 5,000 inscriptions all along the KKH, dating back to between 5,000 and 1,000 BC to the beginning of Islam, and up to the 16th century A.D. Travelers, invaders, merchants, pilgrims and artisans from different historical periods and cultures used the legendary Silk Route. The engravings are mainly concentrated among ten cities between Hunza and Shatiyal. Chilas is one of them. Hundreds of petroglyphs can be seen along the Indus River below the KKH roadside. The best carving sites are across the Thalpan Bridge on the northern bank. The petroglyphs depict a warrior with a hunting knife slaughtering a goat, a snow leopard attacking an ibex, along with groups playing polo, a ploughman, a ruler with captives, and a royal couple.
At an elevation of (11,190 ft, 3,410 m) the primary headwaters of the Kunhar River is located. The lake consists of melted snow water, which flows down from the surrounding mountains. It is the longest and highest lake of the entire region. The flora and fauna belong to the Western Himalayan alpine shrub and meadows eco-region. It is accessible by jeep only during the summer months.
Babu Sar Pass elevation (13,691ft, 4,173m) is located in Diamer and is the highest point above the valley. The landscapes above the tree line connect through Thak Nullah. The Chilasi locals use this meadow for summer pasturing of their livestock. This road is full of twists and turns and is accessible by jeep during the summer months (May-October).
Nanga Parbat elevation (26,6660ft, 8,126m) is the 2nd highest mountain in the Himalayas, Pakistan. It is the 9th highest mountain in the world and is also reputed as “Killer Mountain” among the mountaineers, since more than 40 climbers have lost their lives trying to conquer it. You can take advantage of local jeeps, which will take you up to Tatto village. It is about a 2-hr, electrifying drive from Raikot Bridge to the last village of Tatto elevation (10,826.77ft, 3,300m) During the ascent, you will encounter several photos outlook stops on your way up to Tatto, including a most exhilarating view of KKH & the River Indus.
The most stunning, breath-taking place in entire Gilgit Baltistan is Fairy Meadows elevation (10,826.77ft, 3,300m) It is approachable by jeep, along a 12kilometer road, starting from Raikhot Bridge on the Kara Kurume Highway (KKH) to the village of Tato. Further on from Tato, it takes about three to four hours hiking a five-km trek to Fairy Meadows. The grassland is located in the Raikhot Valley, at one end of the Raikhot Glacier, which originates from Nanga Parbat and feeds a stream that finally flows into the River Indus. It serves as the launching point for trekkers from the Raikhot face of Nanga Parbat. The GB Government declared Fairy Meadows a National Park in 1995.
